What is Machiya?

[ A renaissance of the "beds for eels" !? ]

Machiya is a traditional wooden architectural style that can be seen in central Kyoto. The machiya layout allows people to live their daily lives and operate their businesses in the same building. Machiya in Kyoto is especially called Kyomachiya.
Because of their long and narrow shapes, the machiya houses are nicknamed "beds for eels." Typically, the front windows are covered by wooden lattices and there are Japanese courtyards in the middle and sometimes another one in the back of the house.
Some machiya have been renovated and converted into restaurants, cafes or hotels for visitors to enjoy. KYOTO-SHIRAKAWA is also so.

*It records about Machiya in detail also WIKIPEDIA[Machiya].
